Can Nuggets Use Michael Porter Jr. in Year 1?

Despite not having a first round pick in the 2019 Draft, Denver still possesses one of the league’s most promising rooks: Michael Porter Jr.

Though MPJ spent his initial rookie campaign rehabbing a lengthy back injury, he’s healthy and ready to contribute to Mike Malone’s 54-win team from a year ago. What sort of role will he play? That remains to be seen.

In the preseason, MPJ played sporadic minutes - the main objectives are to get Porter Jr. game experience while getting him up to speed with as many different lineup combinations. Denver was 2-deep at every position last season - there’s an argument to he made there’s additional depth this season. After adding Star UnderDOG Jerami Grant from OKC, there’s no clear opening behind Paul Millsap at the 4, which could be MPJ’s natural position.

Instead, he’ll fight for utility minutes at PF, though his versatility will also lead to time at the 3 & 5. At 6’10, MPJ has the handle, shooting stroke & wingspan to eventually operate at multiple positions in the NBA. A strong utility role is the best-case scenario for both the Nuggets & MPJ in Year 1 - he can develop while still contributing to victories, doesn’t need to assume too much responsibility early on. If the preseason is any indication, Porter Jr. can be utilized as an instant-offense scorer & shot-creator off the bench.

If all goes well, his role will (& should) increase. But for now, MPJ should focus on “X-Factor tendencies” as he finds his footing in the Association.
