The #1 overall pick in 2021, Cade Cunningham is an ultra smooth, 6’6 playmaker w/ a (refreshingly) calm attack - never gets sped up, stays under optimal control (rarely off balance); able to score in a number of ways off the dribble - very mature offensive game*: Cade has a light touch out to the perimeter, likes relying on soft runners, fades & step backs; rare potential for accurate, high-volume sniping - gets shots off w/ ease, can size up & rise off the dribble, behind screens, isn’t bothered by closeouts or range; likes to spin back to his right for turnarounds & short Js - tough to stop in the middle of the floor; top tier float game, natural touch in the lane (aided by a patient approach); instinctive flash, does well finding teammates at the last minute after drawing in multiple defenders; great ball & body fakes, leverages shoulders well before how to attack (slight hesitation gets defenders off balance); excellent floor vision, commands attention as a true scorer & playmaker in the PnR; good athlete but doesn’t expend too much energy w/ big motions - uses more to his advantage defensively; extremely confident player: Cade possesses true takeover ability - can score in bunches & carry a stagnant offense; should never succumb to passivity (has too many weapons at his disposal) - void of many glaring weaknesses though must continue to perfect the management of game flow while maintaining maximum efficiency; Undisputed Franchise Player upside (could happen by Year 3) - DET’s banking on Cade to (eventually) return them to prominence
