KELLY OLYNYK (TOR)
HYBRID
NBA ROLE: VERSATILE, HYBRID BIG
Kelly O. has developed into a versatile, offensive big; a true pick & pop center, Olynyk fits right into today’s NBA – rare in the sense he's confident both (moving off ball and) rising up around screens & slipping back after setting his own; not just a knockdown shooter (38% from deep in ’17-’18), Kelly’s capable of beating his man off the dribble (handles & scores well for a player his size), is comfortable setting up shop for elbow faceups & turnarounds; makes smart reads as a distributor; loves transition threes – it’s almost as if teams forget to guard Olynyk* as a trailing shooter from outside; doesn’t welcome contact or heavy banging in the lane but still converts decently in traffic; efficiency isn’t always a given; needs a mean(er) streak on the boards; traded to hometown Raptors! (2024): adds lots of value as a pick & pop big – Olynyk is normally one of the league's top reserves
*it’s actually because most bigs, especially fives, aren’t naturally accustomed to checking jump-shooting bigs, gravitate towards protecting the paint
